GOLD and I-REC certification for Aras Kargo from Enerjisa Commodities

Aras Kargo, Türkiye’s leading and innovative shipping company, is committed to advancing its environmental stewardship and contributing to a more sustainable future for generations to come. Aras Kargo has been awarded the GOLD and I-REC certificates by Enerjisa Commodities in recognition of its efforts to offset carbon emissions and utilize green energy sources in energy consumption during 2022 and 2023. In collaboration with Enerjisa Commodities, Aras Kargo has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to economic, environmental, and social responsibility by obtaining electricity from renewable sources, which corresponds to the energy produced by 15 wind turbines annually.

Aras Kargo has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, receiving two prestigious certificates from Enerjisa Commodities for its efforts in 2022 and 2023. The company has been at the forefront of reducing its carbon footprint, as well as engaging in afforestation and coastal cleaning initiatives. By obtaining the GOLD certificate, which attests to its commitment to offsetting carbon emissions and its environmental awareness, Aras Kargo has reinforced its commitment to reducing the adverse effects of carbon emissions on the environment with an internationally recognized certificate. Furthermore, the company has obtained the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate) certifying that the electricity is supplied from green energy sources. The company has obtained this certificate to substantiate its commitment to utilizing renewable energy resources in accordance with international standards. The certificate ceremony was held at Enerjisa Commodities and attended by Aras Kargo CFO Barbara Hagen, Enerjisa Commodities Managing Director Yusuf İlimsever, and relevant team members. After the signatures of Barbara Hagen and Yusuf İlimsever, certificates were presented to Aras Kargo.

Hagen: “Our goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050”

In a statement regarding the collaboration with Enerjisa Commodities, Aras Kargo’s CFO Barbara Hagen noted, "As Aras Kargo, we remain at the forefront of the industry in terms of sustainability. As a company in the Austrian Post Office group, which has set a target for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, we organize all our activities with a focus on sustainability. Our objective is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to carry all of our most precious resources into tomorrow. Leveraging our experience in this area, we are developing a unified roadmap for the Austrian Post Office's group companies in eight countries to meet their sustainability targets. Additionally, we are spearheading the ESG activities across the group through our established Competence Center structure within Aras Kargo.”

Stating that Aras Kargo will continue to share its knowledge and experience in sustainability issues with other countries, Hagen continued: “As the first shipping company in Türkiye to publish the sector's first sustainability report, we have set the bar high with our ambitious goals of 'Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement', 'Combating Climate Change' and 'Strong Corporate and Business Culture'. These form the pillars of our strategy in our roadmap, the Sustainability Route, which we created with our sustainability committee. We reached our goal by receiving the GOLD certificate from Enerjisa Commodities in 2022 and 2023 for offsetting our carbon emissions. We also received the I-REC certificate to certify that the electricity we use is supplied from renewable energy sources. These certificates are proof of our commitment to using renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. In line with our partnership with Enerjisa Commodities, we have taken another significant step towards a more sustainable future. We have procured electricity from renewable sources equivalent to the energy produced by 15 wind turbines annually. I would like to thank all our employees who contributed to this important project, and I would also like to thank Enerjisa Commodities for their support, contributions, and sincere hospitality today. We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities on this journey.”

İlimsever: “We will expand our cooperation in green and sustainable energy”

Enerjisa Commodities Managing Director Yusuf İlimsever shared: “At Enerjisa Commodities, we aspire to be a leader in energy and carbon solutions, both globally and in Türkiye. We are honored to serve as a sustainability partner in numerous sectors across the country. This collaboration with Aras Kargo, a prominent shipping company in our homeland, marks an invaluable beginning. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership in the pursuit of green and sustainable energy. The shipping sector plays a pivotal role in the industries where we provide renewable energy solutions. We are committed to continuing our efforts to offer innovative and creative opportunities for a more sustainable future.”

Achieved on a voluntary basis

In 2022 and 2023, the company opted to pursue separate procurement and tender processes for the GOLD and I-REC certificates. It should be noted that these certifications are not legally required. Rather, they represent a voluntary initiative on the part of Aras Kargo. These processes are based on purchasing shares from Enerjisa Commodities' green energy facilities, which are licensed by the company in accordance with international standards. These steps of Aras Kargo are intended to help offset the negative effects of carbon emissions on the environment and return the energy it receives from natural resources back to nature in a way that is universally approved. These certifications are in addition to efforts to reduce carbon emissions and play an important role in environmental sustainability and natural resource continuity by providing green energy support equivalent to the consumption of the organization or consumer.
